As far as domestic shipping (North America) there are basically two methods of auto transport. The first is open carriers. You have seen these trucks on the highway, ten cars on a truck, bi-level loaded, rolling 24 hours a day across America and Canada, dropping off new and preowned cars to dealers everywhere. This is the most economical form of transport, but be aware that due to the open nature of these trucks, rock and element damage can occur. Any carrier we would recommend will have insurance to cover any damages of this nature. The second form of domestic transport is to use an enclosed carrier. Your vehicle is shipped in a closed container, which for the most part eliminates the damage inherent with an open truck. No rock chips or elemental issues, but usually plan to spend several hundred more dollars for this method over and above open carriers.
With either of these methods the car is insured up until the time it arrives to you. At this time, you are required to place insurance on the vehicle before you drive it on your state roads. Shipping costs start at a few hundred dollars for short trips within state lines and can run up to a thousand or so for cross country trips. The price of fuel is definitely the driving factor for increases in price.
